Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is the mainstay in the surgical treatment of sinusitis and nasal polyps, including bacterial, fungal, recurrent acute, and chronic sinus problems. Ample research supports its record of safety and success. FESS is a relatively recent surgical procedure that uses nasal endoscopes through the nostrils to avoid cutting the skin.

FESS is solely based on establishing the drainage pathways, other factors such as pathogens virulence, immune response and allergies are ignored.

Common indications for Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery include:

  • Nasal Polyposis
  • Chronic Sinusitis not responding to medical treatment
  • Recurrent sinusitis > 4-6 hours in 6 months
  • CSF leak closure
  • Excision of selected tumors
  • Optic nerve decompression

We perform Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) for our patients using state of the art equipment. Typically the patient can be discharged have the same day in a few hours with minimal pain and discomfort. We do not pack the nose after sinus surgery unless the patient develops excessive bleeding.

Some patients may require additional surgery to correct their problems, like deviated nasal septum and enlarged turbinate’s that can be performed in the same setting.
